1 Contain

Stop the damage immediately

  1. Cancel all payment cards: Call each bank’s fraud hotline immediately (24/7). They will block the card and issue replacements.
  2. Report your driver’s license: Contact your state DMV to report the license lost or stolen. This flags the license number against misuse.
  3. File a police report: If the wallet was stolen (not just misplaced), file a report and list everything that was inside.
  4. Protect your Social Security number: If your SSN card was in the wallet, place a fraud alert with one credit bureau (it automatically notifies all three). Consider a credit freeze for stronger protection.
  5. Address other contents: Call insurance providers for replacement cards, notify your employer if a work ID was lost, and change your locks if house keys and an ID with your address were together.
  6. Change compromised credentials: If any passwords, PINs, or access codes were written down in the wallet, change them all immediately.

2 Recover

Get back to normal

  1. Verify cancellations: Confirm all compromised cards are canceled. Review recent statements for charges made between the loss and cancellation.
  2. Replace your driver’s license: Visit the DMV with a police report if available. Some states waive the replacement fee for theft victims.
  3. Replace your Social Security card: Request a replacement at ssa.gov or at a local SSA office.
  4. Replace other cards: Health insurance, auto insurance, membership cards, and work badges.
  5. Update autopay: Swap new card numbers into all recurring charges and subscriptions.
  6. Monitor your credit: Check for unfamiliar accounts at AnnualCreditReport.com over the next few months.

3 Prevent

Stop it from happening again

  • Carry only what you need daily. Leave extra credit cards and your SSN card at home.
  • Use mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) to reduce dependence on physical cards.
  • Keep a secure list at home of card numbers (last 4 digits) and each bank’s fraud hotline number.
  • Scan or photograph your ID, insurance cards, and important documents. Store the files encrypted.
  • Do a “phone-keys-wallet” check before leaving any location.
  • Consider a Bluetooth tracker (Tile, AirTag) in your wallet.
